Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown: Last Century
THE area we know today as the borough of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown is a conurbation of Dublin city. At the turn of the century it was a picturesque rural landscape with the Dublin mountains as a backdrop and edged by the coastline of the Irish Sea. The region encompassed the townships of Kingstown (now Dún Laoghaire), Dalkey, Blackrock, and the villages of Dundrum and Stillorgan, while Sallynoggin and Shankill were just small clusters of dwellings in the heart of the countryside.
